Caroline And The Raider

In this entrancing conclusion to her Orphan Train trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller bewitches with a sensual tale of the oldest Chalmers sister, who dares to risk everything in pursuit of a dream… Caroline Chalmers may seem like a staid schoolmistress, but when her promised husband is arrested for a crime that he says he didn’t commit, she walks boldly into a Wyoming frontier saloon and asks former Confederate raider Guthrie Hayes to help her plot a jailbreak. Caroline believes she wants married life with a respectable man—and the disreputable, wildly handsome Guthrie certainly doesn’t fit the bill. But when he kisses her, she is flooded with a shameless passion that leaves her shaken to the core…and longing for more. Guthrie’s hard-won hopes for his future don’t involve helping a naive girl on a foolhardy mission. There’s something about the lovely Caroline’s sensual response to his caresses, however, that makes him forget his sensible plans in an overwhelming yearning to teach this lovely wildcat the true meaning of desire.

... against Guthrie's like an eager lover. Finally, he drew back, his lips curved into a sleepy smile, his hands still resting on Caroline's waist. “Did your gentleman friend ever kiss you like that? This man you 33 CAROLINE AND THE RAIDER ."

Beware Raiders!

A British naval historian recounts the victories and defeats of two of the most infamous German Navy vessels during World War II. Bernard Edwards’s Beware Raiders! tells the fascinating story of two German ships and the havoc they caused amongst Allied shipping in World War II. One was the eight-inch gun cruiser Admiral Hipper—named for World War I’s German fleet Admiral Franz von Hipper—fast, powerful, and Navy-manned. The other was a converted merchant man, Hansa Line’s Kandelfels armed with a few old scavenged guns manned largely by reservists, and sailing under the nom de guerre Pinguin. The difference between the pride of the Third Reich’s Kriegsmarine’s fleet and the converted cruiser was even more evident in their commanders. Edwards emphasizes the striking contrast between the conduct of Ernst Kruder, captain of the Pinguin, who attempted to cause as little loss of life as possible, and the callous Iron Cross–decorated Wilhelm Meisel of the Admiral Hipper, who had scant regard for the lives of the men whose ships he had sunk. Contrary to all expectations, as Edwards reveals in his thrilling accounts of the missions performed by each ship, the amateur man-of-war reaped a rich harvest and went out in a blaze of glory. The purpose-built battlecruiser, on the other hand, was hard-pressed even to make her mark on the war and ended her days in ignominy.

Carlson’s Marine Raiders

On August 17–18, 1942, 211 men of the US Marine Corps' 2nd Raider Battalion conducted a daring amphibious raid on the Japanese-occupied Makin Island in the South Pacific. This ambitious but flawed operation was intended to divert Japanese reinforcements bound for Guadalcanal, over 1,000 miles to the southwest, in the wake of the US landings there ten days earlier; the Raiders were to destroy the seaplane base and radio station, take prisoners, and collect intelligence. Although yielding limited results, it was to be an invaluable test of the innovative training and tactics employed by the Raiders, and a crucial boost to national morale at this difficult stage in the war. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and expert analysis, this gripping account of the fateful Makin Raid tells the whole story, from the plan's conception to its troubled execution and aftermath.

Knights, Raiders, and Targets

Fascinating as the corporate takeovers of recent years have been--with their "golden parachutes" and junk bonds, "greenmailers" and white knights--it is far from clear what underlying forces are at work, and what their long-term consequences will be. Debate over these questions has become polarized: some see takeover threats as disciplinary mechanisms that induce managers to behave efficiently and move assets to higher valued uses or into the hands of more efficient managers; others claim that corporate raiders have produced few observable increases in operating efficiency, but rather have disrupted business planning, enforced a preoccupation with the short-term, and tilted the balance sheets of corporate America towards dangerously high debt levels. Such sharp conflicts in theory and evidence have produced considerable governmental confusion concerning the appropriate policy response. Scores of bills have been introduced in Congress, but legislators are no more in agreement than scholars. Knights, Raiders, and Targets represents one of the first sustained efforts to refine and clarify these issues. Based on papers presented at a symposium sponsored by the Columbia Law School's Center for Law and Economic Studies, it also includes discussion of the informal presentations made at the symposium by the CEOs of several major corporations. This important book airs new theories and offers vital and exciting discussion of the essential issues attached to an event that has become central to American corporate culture.

The Real Cruel Sea

For the British, the Battle of the Atlantic was a fight for survival. They depended on the safe transit of hundreds of convoys of merchant ships laden with food, raw materials and munitions from America to feed the country and to keep the war effort going, and they had to export manufactured goods to pay for it all. So Britain's merchant navy, a disparate collection of private vessels, became the country's lifeline, while its seamen, officially non-combatants, bravely endured the onslaught of the German U-boat offensive until Allied superiority overwhelmed the enemy. In this important, moving and exciting book, drawing extensively on first-hand sources, the acclaimed maritime historian Richard Woodman establishes the importance of the British and Allied merchant fleets in the struggle against Germany and elevates the heroic seamen who manned them to their rightful place in the history of the Second World War.

Both Merten and Bauer now became involved in the British interceptions of the German raider Atlantis and the supply ship Python, alluded to earlier. Mertens refuelled U-68 from Rogge's Atlantis off St Helena on 13 November, ..."

The Doolittle Raid

A pictorial history of America’s response to Pearl Harbor, with “hundreds of photos of the various stages of the raid” (ModelingMadness). On April 1, 1942, less than four months after the world was stunned by the attack on Pearl Harbor, sixteen US aircraft took to the skies to exact retribution. Their objective was not merely to attack Japan, but to bomb its capital. The people of Tokyo, who had been told that their city was invulnerable from the air, would be bombed and strafed—and the shock waves from the raid would extend far beyond the explosions of the bombs. The raid had first been suggested in January 1942 as the US was still reeling from Japan’s preemptive strike against the US Pacific Fleet. The Americans were determined to fight back—as quickly as possible. The 17th Bomb Group (Medium) was chosen to provide the volunteers who would crew the sixteen specially modified North American B-25 bombers. As it was not possible to reach Tokyo from any US land bases, the bombers would have to fly from aircraft carriers, but it was impossible for such large aircraft to land on a carrier; the men had to volunteer for a one-way ticket. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the seventy-one officers and 130 enlisted men embarked on the USS Hornet, which was shielded by a large naval task force—and set out on their mission, which would ultimately jolt the Japanese out of their complacency. This is the full story of this remarkable operation and the men and machines involved, told through a fascinating collection of photographic images.

During a ceremony on 19 September 2016, the USAF's new longrange stealth strategic bomber, the secretive Northrop Grumman B-21, was officially named the 'Raider 'in honour of the men who had attacked Japan on 18 April 1942."

Raiders from the Sea

Raiders from the Sea describes adventures of four children from the small Irish town of Glenelk who find their way for the third time through their secret cave, and back 2000 years to the reign of Queen Maeve of the Thousand Spears in her magic kingdom of Ardalba. This book is third in a series, following The Black Bull of Ardalba (Mercier 2002), and The Fiery Chariot (Mercier 2003). Each book describes complete, separate adventures in magic Ardalba. Raiders from the Sea describes Sea Raiders threatening Maeve's subjects in a distant part of her kingdom if she will not pay them tribute. Breeon, leader of the fisher folk, brings the bad news to Ardalba. If Maeve refuses to pay, the Raiders' leader, Croomloch of the Crooked Tooth, threatens to destroy all her kingdom. How does the Queen respond to this? The children travel with the Queen's champion to give her answer to the Raiders. They meet Breeon's son, Lorca, on their way, badly wounded by the Raiders. Roisin helps him with her First Aid skills. Brona uses his belief in Other World magic to save his life. When Croomloch kidnaps the Queen's son, sending him out in a tiny coracle to where the mysterious Isle of the Blest, just visible on the horizon, will lure him ever seaward and away from the Land of Erin, the children seek help from the Other World, from Mannanán Mac Lir, King of Oceans and Lord of Headlands. Does he help? Do they succeed? Or does Croomloch gain his way? On their journey the children learn faithfulness, resourcefulness and courage. This book gives an engrossing and satisfying read. Its research into Celtic dress, jewellery, weapons, cooking methods, dwellings, and feasting protocols of the time, give it a satisfying authenticity for children of all ages.

RAIDERS

Living in the threat of the third war, John Daniels follows his family tradition and begins training his child to survive. At the age of five, she is taught different styles of martial arts as well as hunting, tracking, and traps. The untimely death of the childs parents throws her into the middle of the war to use what she has learned. One day at a time, Kimber Daniels survives as she was raised to do. Anger for the people responsible for her parents’ death pushes her down the path of revenge. Along the way, the vengeful survivalist discovers she isn’t alone on the path of hate and unknowingly forms what would turn out to be the most dangerous rebel group of that war. The Raiders. Nothing left to lose; the rebels wage their own war on the enemy in a fight for their home and lives. YEAR: 2420 Four hundred years after Earths third war, Supreme Commander Radkins, self appointed leader of the Alterrian nation discovers the groups’ talents. In the middle of a war he started, he develops an interest in the group and what they could offer his troops. The high-tech time he lives in has the best weapons to offer, skilled pilots as well as battle ships powerful enough to destroy planets. The technology of the years had taken away from the people however. Trained to survive a push button world, ground assaults were nothing but stories to the military of this time. Sights set on the rebels from Earths past; Radkins develops a time ship, the Epoch-Hie, to bring the group to his war. Depending on the fact that they were traitors to their country and government, he planned to buy their services. He had no doubts that for the right price, the Raiders would help him over power and enslave the Galithians who were fighting the rebellion against him. Upon discovering Radkins plans, the rebellion is faced with yet another problem in defeating the Alterrian forces. Barely surviving as it was, they would not be able to withstand what the Raiders could do to the rebellion. Appointed to find the group, Major Kile Dorant and the pilots of Fire Squad begin the search. Reading the groups past in the history is alarming to say the least. Known as traitors, murderers, and deserters, the Raiders training and skills would undoubtedly destroy the rebellion if Radkins succeeded in using the group against them.

The Raiders and Writers of Cervantes' Archive

Within the context of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and his influence on Jorge Luis Borges, Manuel Puig and Gabriel Marquez, Paul Kong brings a variety of theoretical perspectives to bear as he analyzes the concepts of the archive and the manuscript. Setting the stage with an exploration of the intricate and intriguing relationship between the archive and the manuscript, Kong questions the apparently natural association between the two. In the light of Kong's historically contextualized and patient exegesis, the ideological nature of the archive, evident in its charge to serve as a totalizing habitat, stands in contrast with the manuscript that resists attempts to contain it. The playful responses of Borges, Puig and Marquez as they mine the "archive" of Cervantes' works support the anti-colonial dimension of Latin American literature and further problematize the relationship between archive and manuscript. The book concludes with a discussion of the future of archival discourse, especially in the setting of the virtual reality of the Internet and of globalization. Carefully grounded by Kong's close readings and supported by a wealth of astute references and allusions to writers as diverse as Virgil, Wordsworth, and Dickens, The Raiders and Writers of Cervantes' Archive is sure to provoke and intrigue Latin American scholars, narrative theorists, archivists, and those interested in issues related to cultural domination, ideology, and cyberspace.

These three raiders and writers of the archive paradoxically remain in Cervantes' shadow, writing with the spectre of Cervantes behind them, and at the same time are playful with Cervantes' shadow. Their raiding is executed through ..."
